Color is perceived when there is light. This lighting is very important in the selection of a color for an area, piece of furniture, or accessory.

There are many terms used to identify different color meanings. Hue is a term used to describe the different varieties of colors such as blue or pink. You could think of hue as the actual color name.

Intensity is the brightness or dullness of color; a color in its purest form has the highest degree of intensity. Dulled colors are used in backgrounds such as areas where people spend a lot of time. You can often dull a color by adding gray, black, or white. The best way to intensify a color is by adding pure color. The law of chromatic intensity is simple, large areas should be covered in the most neutralized colors of the scene. Often as areas reduce in size, chromatic intensities may be proportionately increased. More intense colors advance making an area seem smaller on the flip side, less intense colors recede, and make an area seem larger.
Many often underestimate the value of lightening and darkening in a color. The tint is referred to as the light value of color; closer to white. Shade is the dark value of color; closer to black.

The effect of color varies. Light shades are cheerful, they recede, give a sense of spaciousness and airiness, and greater light reflection; middle values give a relaxing comforting feel for frequently used rooms. Dark values are somber, dignified, restful, or depressing. They advance sharp value contrast and call attention to forms.
Adding warmth and coolness are great ways to add character to a room. Warm colors include yellow, red, and orange. They are a greawonderful way to stimulate activity and raise spirits. They are often used in small amounts or as accents.

The cool colors are blue and green. They recede and are restful and calming.

Remember the essential warmth or coolness of a hue can be altered by addition or subtraction of more intensity to the color. So if you want a warm color, say for a bedroom then choose a lighter tint of that color.
I hope this article helps you understand the definition of some of the technical terms associated with color in decorating.
